What is Public Liability Insurance?
Public Liability Insurance isn’t a legal requirement, but it offers you valuable cover if someone is injured or something is damaged because of your work.
It covers your business against expensive legal or compensation costs if a member of the public or one of your customers makes a claim against you.
Whether you’re working on-site or at a customer’s house, Public Liability Insurance can cover you if something unexpected happens.
Expensive and unexpected costs can be difficult to recover from if you run a small business, or you’re self-employed. Getting the right cover can go a long way towards protecting your livelihood.
What does Public Liability Insurance cover?
Public Liability Insurance covers you when things go wrong during your day-to day work.
Even if you take care to follow all the health and safety rules, things can happen unexpectedly that you can’t do anything about.
For example, if you’re a tradesperson, someone might trip over your toolbox and make a personal injury claim against you, or one of your staff might accidentally break a pipe that causes damage to a customer’s property.
Having Public Liability Insurance means you’re covered against claims for injury, illness or damage as a result of your business activities.
Do I need Public Liability Insurance?
Although you don’t need Public Liability Insurance by law, most public sector organisations and large companies will refuse to work with you if you don’t have it.
Any contact you have with customers or members of the public is a potential risk, so getting the right cover gives you the reassurance that you can continue to build your business even if something unexpected happens.
Tradespeople, business owners, sole traders and self-employed professionals can all face costly claims at some point in their working life that can be covered by having Public Liability Insurance.
